Port of Oakland seeks developers for waterfront

The site, a former marine terminal no longer in use for cargo vessel operations since 2013, offers significant development potential. The port is open to a variety of proposals, including maritime, light industrial, commercial, recreational, and water-oriented uses.

“The port has a major opportunity to create a transformational development project that can provide critical economic benefits to Oakland and the region,” said Port of Oakland chief real estate officer Jonathan Veach.

“We’re looking for development partners who will help realise the port’s commitment to creating good-paying, local jobs for the region while fully activating the Howard Property.”

Howard Property is situated between active industrial operations to the west and Jack London Square, the East Bay’s premier waterfront entertainment destination, to the east. Currently, the property is used primarily for short-term rental agreements supporting container parking and ancillary maritime services.

This request for qualifications (RFQ) follows years of exploration by port officials regarding the site’s future use. In 2019, the port entered into an exclusive negotiation term sheet with the Oakland A’s for a potential mixed-use ballpark development, which expired in May 2023.

The RFQ, available on the Port of Oakland’s website, calls for submissions by 9 December 2024.
