Port of Newport plans major expansion

With a planned investment exceeding £80 million, the initiative is set to create over 50 new full-time jobs and significantly enhance operational efficiency and cargo-handling capabilities.

The Port of Newport, which handled 2 million tonnes of steel in 2024 – representing 29% of the UK’s total iron and steel products – is now poised for further expansion. ABP’s plans include advanced cargo-handling infrastructure, such as magnet-equipped Liebherr cranes and Kalmar forklift trucks.

“Our ambitious plans for development will see over £80 million of investment and over 50 jobs to support Newport as the UK’s largest steel handling port,” said Ashley Curnow, divisional port manager for Wales and the Southwest at ABP.

“This investment in capabilities and infrastructure will ensure the highest level of delivery for our customers. We are also excited to be announcing more development plans for the port in the near future.”

Located strategically with strong multi-modal connectivity, the port serves as a key link between Welsh industry, the Midlands and international markets. ABP’s plans aim not only to support Newport’s legacy in steel but also to expand its role in global trade and supply chains.

The news follows Peel Ports’ announcement that it is investing £100m to boost the UK’s steel capacity.
