Ports undergo security drill

Security efficiency and access controls at ports throughout New Zealand have recently been tested in ” level two” Maritime New Zealand security drills. The half-day exercises have involved port security and operations staff, police, Customs officers, sniffer dogs and x-raying equipment.

The excavator, worth £77,000 was one of two taken in Lincolnshire August this year.

With 99% of New Zealand’s international trade travelling by sea, the exercises are considered crucial to ensuring compliance with the International Ship and Port Security Code (ISPS).

Level two security status is initiated by Maritime New Zealand in consultation with the Government and defence advisers in response to a perceived local terrorist threat or terrorist attack.
