Transnet taps simulation for maritime training

The collaboration with Kongsberg Digital allows Transnet to develop highly skilled port operators by providing “unparalleled realism and functionality” in order to give all trainees hands-on experience in experiencing complex terminal scenarios safely and efficiently.

The package being delivered consists of five Full-Mission K-Sim Navigation simulators, namely:

• One configured as a tug bridge
• One K-Sim VTS (Vessel Traffic Service) simulator for vessel traffic management
• A classroom setup of K-Sim GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) simulators for maritime communication training
• One Full-Mission K-Sim Engine Simulator for advanced engineering training
• A geographical sailing area data base of South Africa’s coastline and harbours to ensure relevant and realistic training environments.

Scheduled for delivery in June 2025, this new extensive suite of simulators are clearly expected to help support Transnet’s mission to enhance trade facilitation, sustainability, and economic growth by boosting training capacity and facilitating industry demand.

This latest investment is certainly needed, as noted recently by the US Department of Agriculture: “South Africa’s port inefficiencies are not just a logistical headache but a drag on economic growth…..during the peak of the port challenges, the collective economic impact of slowdowns can exceed R124-billion a day.
