Realities of “tougher” box terminal sector
The possibility of even-bigger ships, the acceleration of ship cascading and the continuing impact of neo-panamax dimensions on ports are just some of the pressures being placed on container terminals today, according to WSP’s Andrew Penfold.
In a presentation from TOC Europe, WSP’s global maritime director described the container terminal environment as “much tougher” with a concentration of terminal investment from large organisations.
Additionally, the current shipping market outlook remains weak, with a supply and demand imbalance expected to last until next year.
According to Mr Penfold, alliances will witness consolidation of demand and consignment sizes will increase.
All major east-west ports will have to upgrade their access to cater for the largest ships to stay competitive with an emphasis on expanding and improving existing terminals as securing funding for greenfield projects is proving to be problematic.
