Sihanoukville Autonomous Port (SAP) is to build a $200m container terminal as part of an expansion project due to be completed by 2022.
The aim of the expansion is to address a surge in the volume of containers passing through the country’s only deepsea port.
Lou Kim Chhun, direct-general of SAP, told Khmer Times that the volume of containers passing through the port will increase to more than 700,000 teu in 2023, which will overload the existing container terminal.
In response, SAP will invest approximately $200m to build a new container terminal, which will be 14.5 metres deep, 350 metres long and equipped with modern shipment facilities, Mr Kim Chhun said to Khmer Times.
He added that SAP is currently studying the project with the Japan International Cooperation Agency, and want it to be completed by 2022.
Upon completion, SAP will be able to handle around one million teu, he said, much more than the 400,000 teu currently passing through the port.
