Project Director for Static Wound Plant Portfolio Team, National Grid
Andrew has over 35 years’ experience in the electricity supply industry, progressing from apprentice and graduate engineer through project engineering, executive support, and senior project management leadership roles.
His career spans nine years in the nuclear sector and the last 26 years with National Grid, where he has led major strategic and infrastructure programmes. Among his career highlights are securing National Grid’s first Development Consent Order for a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project and leading a nationally recognised employment initiative for young offenders. Working alongside the Chairman, he helped create employment opportunities across National Grid and its supply chain, contributing to a reduction in reoffending rates from 93% to 7% among programme participants who gained employment following training.
Andrew currently leads National Grid’s Static Wound Equipment (SWE) portfolio, covering international procurement from South Korean and European suppliers , manufacturing oversight, supply chain logistics and delivery of the largest and most critical assets used on the UK’s electricity transmission network. These include power transformers, shunt reactors and other major plant, with a portfolio value exceeding £1.5 billion. Such assets are fundamental to maintaining and expanding the transmission system to meet net zero targets and are often among the longest-lead and most complex components within major infrastructure projects.
He is currently establishing a new enterprise-wide organisation focused on the long-term management, supply chain resilience, and delivery of Strategic Works Equipment, supporting National Grid’s unprecedented investment programme over the next decade. The current five-year regulatory period alone includes approximately £40 billion of transmission construction activity, with the vast majority of projects dependent on the successful delivery of these critical assets.
Outside work, Andrew enjoys DIY, F1, paddleboarding and mountain biking, and spending time with his 15-year-old daughter, who remains his greatest challenge - and greatest achievement.
