The pros and cons
Assessing the benefits of modifying ship-toshore cranes is far from an exact science. It is unlikely that modernising an older crane will match the performance of a new unit but it will certainly improve productivity and extend the working life. Although each crane is likely to have to be out of service for at least a month to complete a regeneration project, this is far quicker than ordering new units which can typically take up to two years.
Height and outreach modifications can overcome specific limitations. For instance, following SCT’s recent modifications, the terminal believes it has realised a 15-20% increase in productivity, much of which is attributed to cranes no longer being tied up or not being high enough to get over the deck. The terminal also now has 100% flexibility with its berthing arrangements.
Thamesport’s recent modifications to five cranes cost £2.4m which provided the immediate benefit of being able to service larger vessels.
Equally important though, because the trolley was suffering from wear and tear, fitting a new trolley has regenerated the whole life of the crane. They are now expected to operate effectively for another 15 years. By reducing the trolley weight, the crane has to do less work.
Including new cabs and measures to reduce sway life is made easier for the drivers which will in turn, certainly further enhance productivity.
