Tree-planting project tackles deforestation

During Hutchison Ports’ project, at the end of 2019, almost 1,100 participants including staff, their families and partner, planted over 4,200 trees of various species inside and around the terminals to protect biodiversity.

The initiative took place following the establishment of Hutchison Ports Group Environmental Committee (GEC) in July 2019. GEC is responsible for driving the implementation of a global environmental strategy for the entire group. Go Green 2019 was the first drive after GEC’s establishment, focused on the efforts to help mitigate global deforestation.

Members in the Hutchison Ports network also carried out other activities related to tree planting.

Huizhou Port Industrial Corporation cleared up the weeds and dressed the soil at the Huizhou Quanwan living area, general cargo terminal and oil terminals.

Hutchison Ports BEST went on a guided tour to the wetland close to the terminal where detailed explanation of the whole delta and surroundings was given to staff.

Hutchison Ports Sohar hosted an environmental science lab event for local students to teach them how to do planting and take care of plants by making homemade manure.

Over the past five years, Hutchison Ports has worked with its partners – DP World, Port of Rotterdam Authority, PSA International and Shanghai International Port Group – and their employees to participate in different global environmental initiatives such as waste minimisation and recycling.
