TUTICORIN TO UPGRADE INFRASTRUCTURE
Tuticorin Port Trust has allocated US$22m towards improving infrastructure facilities at the port in 2005-06. This will fund construction of a new berth with alongside draught of 10.7 metres, and also road works costing US$3.8 9m.
Nevertheless, other options are also being studied in case the government says no.
The Port Trust is also seeking government approval to deepen the Inner Harbour from 10.7 to 12.8 metres.
Meanwhile, plans are being advanced to deepen the Outer Harbour to 14-16 metres. Initially, a feasibility study will be undertaken, although the eventual development will be taken forward by the private sector. This would require the creation of between six to eight new berths, as well as comprehensive dredging.
