Port of Tyne is pouring £10m into a drive to attract more power station coal imports, by building a quay extension and conducting a significant dredging project. The quay is due to be extended by 60m which should be complete within six months - further extension may follow in future. The dredging will deepen the Riverside Quay to 12.1m from 10.5m along 580m of its length. A depth of 9.1m along 3km of the approach channel is also to be engineered.
