Unique analysis of transhipment ports

A new report from transport information and consultancy services firm Dynamar has revealed that 24m teu is handled by 20 dominant transhipment ports across the world each year.

Defining a dominant transhipment port as a port that handles over 50% transhipment, Transhipment and Feedering 2018 – Trades and Operators – Ships and Hubs claimed that about 25 ports could be considered dominant transhipment ports last year.

The Mediterranean has the biggest amount of dominant transhipment ports — nine with an average transhipment share of 79% — while the Far East has five dominant transhipment ports with an average of 71%.

North Europe has just two of these types of facilities, both are located in Germany: Wilhelmshaven port/JadeWeserPort, with a 70% transhipment share, and the Port of Bremerhaven, with a 57% transhipment share.

Singapore is the dominant transhipment port in Asia with the greatest transhipment volume while the Bahamas’ Freeport port and Malta’s Port of Marsaxlokk are those with the biggest transhipment shares, at 99% and 95% respectively.
