US Climate Collaborative award
The US San Diego Regional Climate Collaborative, of which the Port of San Diego is a member, has been awarded for its green innovation by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The innovative Partnership Award was given to the collaborative to honour its ground-breaking work with public agencies, organisations and businesses when it comes to cutting edge climate initiatives.
Dan Malcolm, chairman of the board of port commissioners, said that the collaborative’s leadership is an invaluable tool in readying the region for the impacts of climate change.
Established in 2011, the collaborative has 14 primary stakeholders representing local government, utility and energy companies and environmental research experts, all of which work towards advancing comprehensive solutions to facilitate climate change planning.
Among the collaborative’s achievements in 2014 were assisting the San Diego County Office of Emergency Services to incorporate extreme heat, drought and coastal flooding mitigation into the 2015 San Diego Multi-Jurisdiction Hazard Mitigation Plan.
Other accomplishments included providing grant application to coastal cities to help plan for sea-level rise and providing capacity to local agencies for greenhouse gas inventory updates.
The Climate Collaborative also partnered with San Diego Gas & Electric and the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) last year to promote energy efficiency funding and strategies to regional cities through the San Diego Regional Energy Partnership.
