€34.5m for Spanish LNG hub

The energy company has already received authorisation to expand the term of the concession at its Los Barrios terminal in the Port of Algeciras by the Port of Algeciras Bay Authority (APBA). Endesa now intends to adapt the terminal to create storage capacity of around 4,080 cubic meters and a volume of energy managed per year of 1,100GWh.

Endesa’s general director of energy management, Juan María Moreno, highlighted that “the strategic location of our terminal offers a possibility of growth and diversification towards new lines of business, such as LNG bunkering, which fit in and allow us to advance in our decarbonization strategy by betting on activities that lead to a reduction in emissions”.

The company has planned an initial investment of around €15.6m, but this may rise to about €34.5m for the adaptation of the facilities before 2023.

APBA president, Gerardo Landaluce, said the investment is “a commitment to sustainability and alternative energies that will allow the Port of Algeciras to join the sector’s commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of the maritime transport and meet the objectives of the Agenda2030”.

The Los Barrios terminal has enough and reserved space for a possible expansion of two additional docks in the future depending on demand. The facility may increase its storage capacity, from the initial 4,080m3 to 10,000m3 during the decade. The installation of a gas station would also open up the supply of LNG by road.
