Rotortugs on the Thames
The hybrid Kotug Rotortugs ‘RT Ambition’ and ‘RT Evolution’ have towed the Cruise Ship ‘Viking Star’ into the Port of London up the River Thames, marking the port’s largest ever cruise call.
The tugs guided the newbuild 47,800 tonne cruise ship through the Thames Tidal Barrier on the Upper River Thames and assisted the ship to swing and berth at Greenwich as part of the vessel’s maiden voyage.
In addition, the Damen-built ART 80-32 Hybrid Rotortug RT Evolution has been officially named at the Greenwich Ship Tier in London during the cocktail reception of the Tugnology Conference.
Kotug currently operates three hybrid Rotortugs. RT Adriaan and RT Evolution are operating in the Port of Rotterdam and RT Emotion has recently commenced towage activities in the German port of Bremerhaven.
RT Evolution and RT Emotion, both 32m hybrid next-generation ART80-32 Rotortugs, are Damen built and designed by an alliance of Rotortug in the Netherlands and Robert Allan Ltd in Canada.
Kotug said the hybrid tugs generate 50% less harmful emissions, have significant noise reduction, cleaner combustion and substantial maintenance savings, thanks to improved fuel economy. The Rotortug’s hybrid capacity is generated by three electric motors, complemented by a battery pack and managed by an intelligent XeroPoint Hybrid Propulsion System.
