WWL switches to low sulphur fuel

This comes after the company’s sulphur policy was reviewed to find a shift in emphasis towards the social aspects and health considerations of using low-sulphur fuel, as well as it’s obvious environmental advantages.

Anna Larsson, global head of sustainability at WWL, said: “In the past there was generally quite a one-sided emphasis on acidification when it comes to sulphur.!

“Following a review of our sulphur policy and taking into account current research, we realised that we can make a significant impact both socially and on people’s health. It was a logical progression for us to turn our attention more to what is happening at the port.”

The move means that WWL will now switch to either marine gas oil or scrubbers, onboard devices that remove sulphur from exhaust gases.

Over half of the ports that company visits on a regular basis are outside the areas where low-sulphur fuel is compulsory.

Edvard Molitor, senior manager of environment at the Port of Gothenburg, concluded: “It’s taking too long. That’s why it’s good that WWL is addressing the situation directly.”

“I agree with their thinking when it comes to broadening the horizon regarding the effects of sulphur emissions. Hopefully others will follow suit, even if conditions vary from one shipping company to another.”
