Americas sustain containerport throughput

North America’s Pacific seaboard specifically has been feeling the strain due to a rise in imports from Asia and above average economic growth of western US states.

However, OSC believes that this pressure will ease with the expansion of the Panama Canal and the increases in allwater services to the east coast. While ports on Mexico’s Pacific seaboard are also being developed, OSC still points to US Pacific ports for future growth.

Ocean Shipping’s research revealed that throughput in the Americas expanded by 121% between 1995-2005 and by 47% between 2000-2005. North American containerport throughput doubled from 1995-2005 and increased by 42% over 2000-2005. Box throughput in the Caribbean Basin and Central American region increased by 151% over 1995-2005 and 45% over 2000-2005. Last year, the Caribbean islands accounted for 50.2% of regional container volumes.
