Kalmar is supplying electric handling equipment to a new largescale intermodal terminal in Melbourne, Victoria

Australian operator, Intermodal Terminal Company (ITC) has ordered six electric reachstackers and two electric empty container handlers for deployment at its new A$400 million Somerton Intermodal Terminal (SIT) being developed in Melbourne, Victoria. Booked originally in Q3 2023, the new equipment is scheduled to arrive in Q1 2025.

SIT has a planned capacity of one million TEU per annum and ITC is predicting it will remove 500,000 truck trips per annum from Melbourne’s roads. It is due to open in 2025.

Kalmar’s reachstackers and empty container handlers will be powered by lithium-ion battery technology. As part of the Kalmar Complete Care agreement, a Kalmar maintenance team and parts inventory will be located at the terminal to ensure 24/7 support for the equipment is maintained.

In Rotterdam, Kalmar is to supply Hutchison Ports’ ECT Delta terminal with two fully electric straddle carriers, with delivery confirmed for Q4 2024.

The new straddle carriers are part of a fleet renewal programme currently underway that will allow ECT to achieve emission-free operations at its ECT Delta and ECT Euromax terminals by 2035. ECT will be piloting two different battery technologies in these electric straddle carriers.

The order also includes Kalmar Insight coverage for all of these machines, which is a performance management tool that turns data into actionable, impactful insights. For electrically powered machines, the Kalmar Insight Energy Module provides visibility over the battery charge status, energy utilisation and key performance indicators related to charging.

In another recent agreement, Kalmar has concluded a deal with Soci De Manutention Et De Consignation Maritime (SOMACOM) to deliver three diesel-electric straddle carriers for use at the Ile de la Reunion Terminal on Reunion Island. Delivery is scheduled to be completed during Q4 2024.

The new straddle carriers, according to Kalmar, are powered by a highly efficient diesel-electric power unit and feature excellent manoeuvrability, quiet operation and easy maintenance. The spacious, ergonomic cabin and intuitive user interface help to improve productivity by ensuring that operators benefit from the safest possible driving experience.

Port Reunion, is situated on the west coast of Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean. It is the only port on the island and is located 20km from the capital, St Denis.

Further, Kalmar has signed a joint development agreement for autonomous terminal tractor solutions with Forterra (formerly RRAI) to jointly develop autonomous terminal tractor solutions. Kalmar will be responsible for developing the automation-ready terminal tractor (including the drive-by-wire solution integration), while adding the Kalmar One fleet management system to manage the operation of automated terminal tractor fleets. Forterra will process the integration of its AutoDrive platform for autonomous operations for the project.
