Ports of Auckland is inviting shipping and freight industry stakeholders to partake in a series of discussions about the development and implementation of a vehicle booking system (VBS).
Considered vital to aligning truck calls to cargo flow, the VBS will require the industry to adhere to new disciplines, such as expanding operational hours and removing pickups made “on the fly”
The port has also announced it is committing capital and other resources to achieve its goal of becoming Australasia’s premier container hub port. It wants to expand its scope to act as a hub for Australian containers moving between regional feeder services and large long-haul vessels plying major overseas markets.
Meanwhile, retiring chief executive Geoff Vazey has highlighted the importance of an efficient and unhindered supply chain to maximising economic productivity and providing the array of consumer choice available in modern Western society.
With the Auckland port handling two-thirds of New Zealand’s imports and one-third of its exports by value, he said it was also vital the port’s future not be materially limited by external pressures.
