Coastal depot to grow Italian LNG market

Italy’s Port of Naples has been chosen as a new site for a small-scale LNG coastal depot making liquid natural gas readily available as a fuel on the mainland, both at sea and on land.

The joint construction project by Edison and Kuwait Petroleum Italia (Q8), presented at the Naples Shipping week, will allow to the Port of Naples to attract vessels with a lower environmental impact, helping grow the tourist and commercial sectors in the area.

“Edison wants to be a key player in the country’s energy transition and has identified the decarbonisation of transport as one of the fundamental axes of its strategic development plan,” said Pierre Vergerio, Edison’s Executive Vice President Gas Midstream, Energy Management and Gas Infrastructures.

“The project in the port of Naples is an integral part of this plan which provides for the creation of the country’s first LNG logistics chain to make heavy, sea and road transport sustainable.”

Green strategy

This project in the Tyrrhenian Sea, one of the first in Italy and the Mediterranean, is in line with the European green strategy and international regulations on sustainable mobility for heavy maritime and road transport.

Furthermore, the new infrastructure created by the project will make it possible to increase the technological standards of the entire Darsena Petroli and increase the volume of port services, with positive repercussions for the companies present both in the area and in the port.

Edision is already building the first coastal LNG depot in the Port of Ravenna with Petrolifera Italo Rumena (PIR).

The company is one of the main Italian operators in the energy sector. As a long-term importer of LNG in Italy and manages a large and diversified LNG portfolio allowing it to guarantee continuity of supply.
