Work on Congo Terminal, the new name of the container terminal in the Port of Pointe-Noire (Congo Brazzaville), has started.
The first stage of the works will be to prolong the quay by 270m to a total length of 800m with a depth of water of 15m, capable of receiving container ships with a capacity of up to 7,000 teu.
At the end of the concession, Congo Terminal will have 1,500 linear meters of quay (800m with a depth of 15m and 700m with a draft of 13m). The storage space will be extended from 17 to 38 ha and there are plans for 14 quayside gantry cranes and 34 storage yard gantries.
These resources should enable it to achieve a flow of 1m teu per year by 2020 (as against some 200,000 teu in 2008).
The aim of Congo Terminal is to make Pointe-Noire the benchmark deepwater port for Central Africa, both as a major transhipment terminal and also as the main port for hinterland transits in the Congo basin, in particular serving the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic and the north of Angola.
