Doha leaves paper behind

The automation of operational processes will significantly enhance productivity and efficiency at the port and increase throughput from 400,000 teu to 750,000 teu annually.

The new Jade TOS is being implemented by Milaha – which took over operational duties at Doha Port from Qatar Ports Management Company last year.

By using the TOS, operator Milaha aims not only to to increase throughput capacity at the terminal but also to improve efficiency through centralised berth, vessel and yard planning, container handling equipment control and provide real-time information reporting for customers.

But according to the port, even though the new system will allow for a little extra capacity, it will not solve the limited capacity problem in the future.

Alan Middleton, vice president port services at Milaha, said to Port Strategy: “This capacity will not be enough for the country’s future requirements which will need additional capacity to meet the expected increased volumes for the next few years until the New Doha Port is operational in 2016.”

The good news is that the application of TOS technology is a huge leap forward because it will “bring Doha Port into line with the operations of recognised international standard ports in the region”, he added. Important, if Doha wants to retain its competitiveness.
