MacGregor is reporting strong demand for its electric crane technology in the first half of 2026, with electric models accounting for more than 80% of its overall crane order intake.

The trend is being driven largely by heavy-lift and multipurpose vessels, while container ships are also contributing a significant share as investment in the sector gathers pace.

MacGregor says electric cranes dominated first-half 2026 orders

MacGregor says the figures reinforce growing interest in technologies that can improve vessel efficiency while reducing environmental impacts.

“By leveraging our long-standing expertise, we continue to deliver solutions that combine precise load control with substantial operational savings and a reduced environmental footprint for our customers.”

MacGregor’s current electric crane portfolio includes its HCE-series heavy-lift cranes and MCE-series container cranes, which use Generation 2 variable frequency drive technology. Compared with conventional hydraulic systems, the electric drives can reduce energy consumption by up to 60%, according to the company.

The technology also removes the risk of hydraulic oil leakage, potentially reducing environmental risks associated with crane operation and maintenance. Improved precision in load handling can further support efficient cargo operations.

The shift towards electrification comes as shipowners and operators face increasing pressure to reduce energy consumption and improve the environmental performance of maritime assets. Equipment efficiency is becoming an increasingly important consideration alongside vessel propulsion and fuel choices.

MacGregor has been developing electric cranes for more than 20 years and says more than 800 of its electric-driven cranes are now operating globally.

The company’s electrification strategy extends beyond cranes. Its portfolio also includes electric-driven hatchcovers, deck machinery and walk-to-work gangways, providing operators with opportunities to reduce reliance on hydraulic systems across multiple areas of vessel equipment.

Lifecycle management is another element of the sustainability equation. MacGregor provides service and maintenance support intended to extend equipment lifecycles, potentially reducing the environmental and financial costs associated with premature replacement.

The company’s latest order figures suggest that electrification is moving further into mainstream maritime operations, particularly as vessel owners seek practical ways to combine operational efficiency with sustainability targets.
