First containership LNG-fuel conversion

Bureau Veritas announced at SMM that it is set to class the first containership LNG fuel conversation.

Bureau Veritas will class the first containership LNG fuel conversion on the MV Wes Amelie

Wessel Reederei will convert one of its fleet of 1,036 teu vessels, MV Wes Amelie, to LNG fuel. The conversion will take place in 2017.

“Our experience with this kind of conversion on small scale LNG vessels helps the owners and other partners to move confidently to this new and cleaner fuel,” explained Phillippe Donche-Gay, president of Bureau Vertias’ marine and offshore division.

MV Wes Amelie has a MAN Diesel & Turbo eight-cylinder engine driving its controlled pitch propeller, MAN will convert the existing engine to a 50/60 dual-fuel engine.

The consulting arm of Bureau Vertias, Tecnitas, is currently carrying out risk analyses for new LNG fuel system and operations such as LNG bunkering.

The project is sponsored by the German Ministry of Transport and partners are Wessels Reederei, MAN Diesel & Turbo, TGE Marine Gas Engineering, SMB Naval Architects & Consultants and Bureau Veritas.
