GPA boss extols harbour deepening
Doug J. Marchand, executive director of the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA), says when the Brunswick Harbor Deepening project is complete, opportunities will be greatly expanded for the port. ” The ability to handle larger vessels with the tidal influence opens access to 45% more of the deep draught vessel market.
“The new depth will mean that an additional 22% of the world’s auto carrier fleet will be able to call on Brunswick with more cargo, more frequently, ” says Marchand.
“Not only will the dredging remove constraints for vessel traffic already calling Brunswick, it will create an excellent new sales tool to attract additional bulk, breakbulk and roll/on, roll/off cargo to benefit our community.”
The United States Army Corps of Engineers has reported that this year’s capacity for the project is $38m, however only $10 million has been appropriated for the project thus far.
“In order for our community to realize our goal of a substantial increase in FY05 funding for the Harbour Deepening, area business and political leaders must stay engaged to encourage funding support for this vital project.”
