Antwerp insists operations normal post-strike
The Port of Antwerp has said operations have returned to normal following a strike by the Flemish Pilotage Service union which led to a backlog of vessels and container handling delays.
The planned 24-hour strike began on Monday but was called off on Tuesday, said the port. However, in a statement on its website on Wednesday 19 September, intermodal operator Contargo said: “There are still 30 ocean-going vessels waiting to enter Antwerp, and three have not been able to run.”
A spokesperson for the port told Port Strategy today: “Operations have resumed. The strike was put to an end on Tuesday and employees are back at work.”
The spokesperson confirmed there are no backlog issues at the port. However, Contargo said that while the situation has improved slightly, inland waterway traffic and increased waiting times should be expected “due to the strike aftermath”.
A compromise was reached between Minister Homans and the unions and a second strike planned for Friday 21 September has also been cancelled, according to Contargo.
