Barcelona ferry crash halts APM operations

The GNV Excellent ferry struck a crane on the South wharf, where the Muelle Sur Container Terminal operated by APM is located, which caused the crane to collapse onto several containers of the terminal, 7 of which are classified because they contained dangerous goods, said a port spokesperson, who confirmed that “nobody was injured on board or at the container terminal.”

Although the containers set alight by the crane impact were classed as dangerous goods “none of the products that transported containers represent a high risk at the level of industrial safety,” said the port spokesperson.

Several emergency organisations and four tugboats were called to the scene.

The port confirmed there were strong winds at the port at the time of the incident.

Muelle Sur Container Terminal, operated by APM Terminals since January 2016, has an annual throughput capacity of 2.3m teus.
