Backing for Thames wharves report

The report’s proposals on the use of the existing ‘safeguarding’ policy (which protects riverside wharves from redevelopment into nonport use) are endorsed by the PLA. The report recommends:

25 wharves west of the Thames Barrier should remain ‘safeguarded’ 25 wharves east of the Barrier should be ‘safeguarded’ for the first time 3 wharves west of the Barrier should be released from ‘safeguarding’ 19 wharves east of the Barrier should not be ‘safeguarded’ The PLA also strongly supports the ‘reactivation strategy’ to bring back into use some currently unused wharves. This follows a marketing exercise led by the PLA. The three wharves chosen to be brought back into use first are Hurlingham Wharf in Hammersmith & Fulham; Orchard Wharf in Tower Hamlets and Peruvian Wharf in Newham.

Port of London Authority chief executive Richard Everitt said: “This report recognises the importance of the Thames as an environmentally friendly thoroughfare into the capital.

The recommendation to safeguard wharves east of the Thames Barrier is also excellent news. It ensures the Port of London’s key position as the natural gateway to the major markets of London and the South East.”
