ACT to shut up shop in 2013
On 1 January 2013, Amsterdam Container Terminals will close its doors for the final time. After having lost the contract with the Grand Alliance in early 2010, it has been unable to attract any other significant vessel calls.
The decision has been made by Hutchison Port Holdings, which acquired the terminal in 2008 as part of a share swap agreement with the Japanese shipping group NYK.
ACT, which was previously known as the Ceres Paragon terminals, had an unusual layout, featuring indented berths that allow vessels to be worked from both sides simultaneously.
Although, Dertje Meijer, the president and chief executive of the Port of Amsterdam expressed regret at the announcement, he also conceded that “it was impossible to manage the terminal in a profitable way”. It was also pointed out that containers represent only a relatively small proportion of overall traffic at the port, which is focused mainly on energy products.
