GT closes for want of traffic
For the first time since it opened in September 1995, the Italian transhipment hub of Gioia Tauro was forced to close for 30 hours in January because of lack of traffic.
Medcenter Container Teminal has seen some traffic shifted to other hubs in the Mediterranean.
However, the port authority chairman has revealed that the port’s biggest customer, MSC, is the only major shipping line that responded well to the cut in operating costs achieved last year. In the second to quarter of 2010, it handled 20% more traffic at the port. The other major customer, Maersk, did not respond accordingly.
