Port logistics group, Hamburg Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), will be using a fleet of 24 Kangoo Maxi ZE zero emission vans from Renault to transport personnel at HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT), in a bid to reduce emissions.
HHLA ordered the vehicles as part of the Hamburg Current Affairs Project, which is being funded by the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development (BMVBS) as part of the Electric Mobility Pilot Regions programme.
The Renault vans, called Kangoos, will each use around 50,000 kWh of electricity. They will be powered by renewable energy from a solar panel which was installed in 2011 on the roof of CTT's workshop building and will be used to transport people around the terminal.
Enak Ferlemann, Parliamentary State Secretary at the BMVBS, said: “The Hamburg electric mobility pilot region has successfully shown that it has the potential to implement complex infrastructure projects for everyday situations. The Port of Hamburg is a good example of how zero emission mobility is being achieved on the ground.”
Frank Horch, Hamburg Minister of Economics, Transport and Innovation, added: “Transport and logistics play a major role in Hamburg’s economy and so the city is supporting the federal government’s plans to expand electric mobility while setting its own particular priorities. At the port, HHLA is providing an impressive demonstration of how electric vehicles are already suitable for everyday use in terminal traffic.”
The Kangoos are another step towards HHLA’s plan to reduce specific carbon dioxide emissions per container handler by 30% by 2020.
