Invasive species control award

The award, given to private sector companies that have introduced a product or service that has the potential to reduce the environmental and economic risks posed by invasive species, recognises Trojan’s proven ballast water treatment technology.

Over 90% of the world’s trade is carried by sea, and each year it is estimated that transfers of over 10 billion tonnes of ballast water take place around the world. Ballast water taken on in one ecological zone and discharged, untreated, into another can result in the introduction and spread of aquatic invasive species.

“The spread of aquatic invasive species is a very real, very serious threat to our environment,” explained Scott Cameron, RRISC’s president.

“The Trojan Marinex ballast water treatment system plays an important role in solving this problem and restoring balance to the marine environment. We thank them for all they are doing to protect our waterways.”

Trojan’s contribution has not only been in the development of robust, chemical-free ballast water treatment technology, but also includes foundational research to enable the use of low-energy treatment of ballast water using UV technologies.

The award was presented on 15 June at the annual RRISC congressional reception in Washington, DC.
