Javas new BIP port gets lift-off
Construction of the Bojonegara International Port (BIP), west of Jakarta, began in December with the inauguration of the project in Banten by President Megawati Soekarnoputri.

Pelindo II, the construction of the BIP requires a total investment of $765.8m, $412.35m financed by the state budget. The remainder will be financed by private domestic and foreign investors, as well as by the Banten provincial government and the Serang district government.
The port will be constructed in three phases, the first scheduled to be finished by 2010. Ttwo container cranes, six RTGs, two reach stackers and ten trucks will be deployed initially.
Pelindo II expects the second phase to be completed in 2014 and the final phase by 2025. BIP is designed to accommodate 8,000 TEU vessels and when fully completed, have a total of five terminals and a capacity of 2.4m TEUs, making it Indonesia’s largest port.
