LA offers US$1m in community grants

Grant applications are now open to non-profit organisations, with awards considered for initiatives or events that help promote maritime and port-related workforce development and education; sustainable practices aimed at preservation and conservation of natural resources in the port environment; or the LA Waterfront, its history and culture.

Up to US$1m in community grants is available in total, with funding is available in three categories: small (US$5,000 and under), medium (between US$5,001 – $99,999) and large (US$100,000 or more).

Since fiscal year 2013-14, the Community Investment Grants Program has provided US$5m in funding for 176 local initiatives.

Funds come from the Los Angeles Harbor Department’s annual budget – self-supported entirely from shipping and lease revenues rather than tax-payers.

Grant applications will be reviewed by a committee comprised of a representative from Los Angeles City Council District 15, a San Pedro community representative, a Wilmington community representative, and three internal port staff members.

Applications close on 6 May and the committee is expected to announce final grant awards in mid-June.
