Maersk Line New Zealand country manager Julian Bevis says the chance of vessels bigger than the current-largest of 4100 teu coming to New Zealand in the short term is relatively small. However, he also points out that only Ports of Auckland could currently cater for vessels up to 5,000 or 7,000 teu capacity.

While not calling for outright Government intervention nor that councils be pushed to sell their local ports, Mr Parker nonetheless lamented that most ports are making "truly abysmal financial returns on their assets".
