The Denmark-based Centre for Port Dimensioning has given the go-ahead for the Mexican port of Lazaro Cardenas to receive vessels of at least 12,500TEUs, despite the fact that none yet exist. It is the only port in Mexico capable of accommodating ultra-large container vessels, which even Long Beach and Los Angeles would not be able to handle. The Mexican port has sufficiently deep water to enable it to handle vessels drawing up to 18 metres.
