LONG BEACH

Long Beach is seeking public input for an Environmental Impact Report intended to address a cleanup project at Pier A West, a 123-acre oil field.

This will be located close to the mouth of the Panama Canal, adjacent to the former US Howard airbase.

The Long Beach Harbour Department bought the property in 1994 from a subsidiary of Union Pacific Railroad, and have had to contend with soil and groundwater contaminated by decades of oil production and industrial disposal.

It is hoped that a co-ordinated plan will clean up the land and return it to productive use.
