Sustained strong demand for Australian coal has led to a need for capacity expansion at the terminal to meet the needs of existing and potential mining customers.

Taiwan-based Evergreen group has sent a letter of intent to Ningbo Port Authority covering development of Phase 4 of its Beilun Port complex. The company is said to have beaten out HPH. And COSCO Pacific is spending $200 million this year on terminal investments at Tianjin, Dalian, Zhengiang, Yingkou and elsewhere. First half throughputs, mainly in China, grew by a staggering 41.5% to 10.7m TEUs making it the sixth largest terminal operator in the world. Meanwhile APM Terminals is investing $181m in a joint venture to develop Xiamen Songyu Container Terminal. HPH and CSXWT already have a presence in Xiamen.
