Transportation service company, Metrans, subsidiary of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik (HHLA), has taken over the trimodal container terminal in the Port of Krems, Austria, after acquiring Mierka Donauhafen Krems GmbH & Co KG.
The terminal in the Danube is linked via train, roads and inland waterways. With the acquisition, the 30,000m² site will now provide a direct link between the German seaports and the economic region of lower Austria. To begin with, three trains will connect Krems with Hamburg and Bremerhaven each week, although this is due to increase to five trains.
Jiri Samek, managing director, Metrans, said: “The new site at Krems allows us to expand our Metrans network with a terminal that is strategically well-placed in the centre of Lower Austria. It offers excellent conditions for extending Austrian traffic to and from the European seaports we serve.”
The terminal is already being used by well known shipping companies. Metrans provides the full range of container services to its users including a depot for empty containers, storage and repair.
The traffic from the terminal at the Port of Krems will also be linked with German seaports via the new hub terminal due to open in Eastern Czech Republic next year.
