MOFFATT & NICHOL $3.4M CHARLESTON CONTRACT

Port planning specialist and engineer Moffatt & Nichol has been awarded a $3.4m contract to develop a marine container terminal at the former Charleston Naval Base in North Charleston, South Carolina.

When completed, the terminal will occupy 286 acres and consist of three berths, state-of-the-art terminal gates and associated buildings and container storage yards. “There are a number of challenges to creating a container terminal at the site, the biggest of which is the stabilisation and improvement of very weak, compressible soils,” said Tim Reid, operations manager, Raleigh.
