MSC negotiating second Montevideo box terminal
MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) is reported to be in negotiations to build a second container terminal in the Port of Montevideo, having put forward a proposal to the National Ports Authority (ANP) at the end of last year.
At the same time, the company is also talking to Katoen Natie with a view to acquire the 80% stake it holds in the Terminal Cuenca del Plata (TCP) box handling facility.
According to the local Observador newspaper, some within the ANP view a second container in a positive light, given it would help relieve congestion pressures on ANP, which struggled to cope with cargo barged down from Paraguay in December.
Others believe this to be a negotiating tactic: to force Katoen Natie to drop the price it is asking for its ANP stake. The shipping line began talking with the Belgian owners in September 2017, only to later break off and put forward its new terminal proposal.
