New York/New Jerseys flat figures
Year-end throughput figures for the US Port of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) make ugly, albeit expected, reading reporting flat growth in container activity for the first time since 1993.
During 2008, PANYNJ reported that total container traffic in the port was 5.27m teu, compared with 5.3m teu in 2007.
The port authority said it expected this decreased activity to continue in 2009 as the “full effect of the economic downturn is realised”.
However, the operator is looking ahead to more prosperous times, and is continuing its investments in ExpressRail and other infrastructure to support expected long-term cargo growth.
The port authority also added that its facilities continue to “outperform other major ports in North America” with container volumes at the top 10 ports in North America declining by an average of 5% in 2008.
