Green hydrogen plant to target CO2 emissions

A Belgian consortium has proposed a green energy plan using hydrogen which seeks to double the annual reduction of CO2 emissions in Flanders.

The Port of Oostende, DEME Concessions and PMV’s goal is to build a hydrogen plant at the port, operational by 2025, producing the fuel as a source of electricity, heat and a raw material for industrial purposes.

The Hyport plant in the Plassendale 1 port area will only produce green hydrogen – that is hydrogen produced using renewable energy. It aims to deliver a CO2 reduction of around 500,000 to 1,000,000 tonnes per year.

To deliver on the green hydrogen promise, the port has planned new offshore wind concessions, aiming to install 399 offshore wind turbines with a total capacity of 2.26GW. There is a total planned total capacity of around 4GW though, which could ultimately supply half of Belgian households with electricity.

Project

In the first phase of the Hyport project, the plant’s general feasibility will be further investigated and a development plan will be worked out.

Then, an innovative demonstration project with mobile shore-based power will be built for testing purposes.

Going forward, PMV will spearhead funding for the development, with its experience in the construction and operation of the infrastructure necessary for energy projects.

It has set up an expertise unit to gather knowledge and improve funding for potential ideas.

Investment and expertise will also come from DEME, which plans to invest in the development and large-scale production, storage and delivery of green hydrogen as a long-term business strategy.
