Russia gets wind powered

An agreement between the Delo Group, the largest transport and logistics holding in Russia and JSC Atomenergoprom, part of NovaWind JSC, Rosatom’s wind energy division, will focus on switching terminals to low-carbon green energy sources.

“Rosatom is consistently implementing a strategy for low-carbon energy production based on nuclear and wind power generation,” said Ekaterina Lyakhova, head of business development, Rosatom.

“In many ways, this becomes the key to competitiveness and long-term commercial success.”

Green ports

One of the first steps to implement the agreement provides for the supply of electricity generated from wind energy to NUTEP Container Terminal LLC and KSK Grain Terminal JSC in Novorossiysk. Both are a part of DeloPorts LLC, a stevedore asset of the Group.

The terminals become the first large port infrastructure facilities in Russia to announce a switch to renewable energy.

According to the agreement, from January 1, 2022, the terminals will completely switch to wind-generated electricity.

The “green port” project will enable the use of electricity generated from low-carbon green energy sources (RES) to facilitate exports from the Russian Federation with minimal CO2 emissions, reducing indirect greenhouse and carbon emissions for port customers.

Depending on the methodology adopted by the European Union, the indicators could also reduce the “carbon tax” on exports to the European Union for Russian exporters.

According to NovaWind JSC, the potential reduction in CO2 emissions due to NUTEP and KSK switching to wind energy will amount to 6.8 and 5.7 thousand tonnes of CO2 per year, respectively, when compared to traditional sources of electrical energy.

The green port project at DeloPorts enterprises is a pilot project, but long-term one. The Delo group intends to expand and develop it at its other enterprises.
