Shining the light on energy savings

Port officials wanted a replacement for its outdated HPS (high-pressure sodium) lighting which was both costly and time-consuming to maintain so they decided on an upgrade to a Musco Green Generation Lighting® LED lighting system, one of ABP’s first large scale upgrades to LED.

Jason Van Wyk, Musco Lighting, told GreenPort: “The system that we have designed around LED light source provides a more focused light on the working area, eliminating wasted spill light and significantly reducing glare for workers. Our systems come with Musco’s parts and labour warranty which eliminates maintenance costs for ten years and is backed by a global team of technicians.”

Because the upgrade involved the installation of fixed mounting brackets and the removal of the existing raise and lowering rings, ABP is now also able to save significant costs by eliminating annual health safety inspections required for mobile rings.

Additionally, Musco’s system approach to lighting includes remote electrical enclosures mounted on the lower part of the pole for improved reliability and serviceability. Operating costs are also reduced with the long life of the LED light source.

ABP’s new lighting system is equipped with Musco’s Control-Link® controls and monitoring system allowing for remote on/off and dimming functions.

The dimming capability means that while the port will often operate 24/7, it only requires higher light levels for one hour each night for operations saving money and making operations much more energy efficient.
