CustomAI boosts European border security
Fundación Valenciaport has begun work on the CustomAI security project, an initiative applying artificial intelligence to improve the efficiency, effectiveness and accuracy of customs controls across the European Union.
The project is being developed in collaboration with the Spanish Tax Agency (AEAT), the Guardia Civil and 18 additional European partners from government, industry and research.
As global trade volumes continue to expand, customs agencies face increasing pressure to prevent illegal goods from entering the EU without disrupting legitimate supply chains. CustomAI addresses this challenge by integrating advanced, non-intrusive technologies capable of predicting, detecting and prioritising risky shipments with greater precision.
A core component of the initiative is the development of a virtual customs control operations centre, designed to enable coordinated management and analysis of data related to goods, containers and parcels.
Due to the project’s technical and operational complexity, Fundación Valenciaport will act as a key liaison with law enforcement and customs authorities, including the Guardia Civil, AEAT and port police.

The CustomAI project was officially launched during an in-person kick-off meeting held this week in Granada, where partners agreed on initial objectives and pilot activities. A major pilot will take place at the Port of Valencia, where the AI-based solutions will be tested in a live port environment.
Led by Legind Technologies, CustomAI has a budget of more than €3 million and is co-financed by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency.
The use of artificial intelligence in global customs control is set to soar. DP World recently announced a partnership with Bigbear.AI aimed at developing digital solutions for customs and border operations.
