Next phase of the Shore Power Project

The Port of Hueneme has announced the second half of its Shore Power Project, and confirmed that environmental stewardship remains its top priority.

Board of Harbour Commissioners and Congresswoman Julia Brownley will celebrate the launch of Phase II on 2 May 2016 at the port.

Programmes at the Port of Hueneme were put in place mandating that refrigerated cargo vessels, called ‘reefer vessels’ reduce greenhouse gas emissions of their ships at berth while in California ports.

By connecting to the Port’s Grid-Based Shore Power System, the reefer vessels calling the Port will run their auxiliary marine engines on shore power in lieu of diesel fuel and dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Phase II of the project represents the next step forward for the port and local the community. Over the lifetime of this project it is hoped that emissions from ‘reefer vessels’ will be significantly reduced.
