Huge rail upgrade begins at Long Beach
Work has begun on ‘America’s Green Gateway’ – a significant upgrade to facilities which will triple rail cargo capacity at the Port of Long Beach in California.
Costing US$1.567 billion and scheduled to complete by 2032, the Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility project will double the footprint of the existing rail yard from 82 to 171 acres (33 to 69 hectares).
The upgrade will more than triple the port’s capacity for on-dock rail to 4.7 million teu per year, reducing emissions at the port and surrounding area.
“The Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility will add 130,000 feet of new tracks, build 36 new support tracks and more than double the number of trains leaving the port to 17 per day,” said Port of Long Beach chief executive, Mario Cordero.
“These improvements will benefit the entire US supply chain and get us closer to the operational and environmental transformation into a zero-emissions port.”
Funding has come from both federal and state government with the Biden administration pledging US$404.1 million and the state of California and Los Angeles county contributing US$228.8 million and US$10 million respectively.
“The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law continues to deliver for California by modernising ports that power our economy, enhancing reliability and capacity of rail operations and creating good-paying jobs,” said US Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif).
“The project will slash emissions and reduce air pollution in near-port communities while creating a more efficient gateway into our national supply chain.”
