Malta Freeport Terminals expansion
Malta Freeport Terminals is bolstering its capacity to handle the world’s largest container ships with its first terminal expansion in two decades.
The agreement with the Maltese government will see the north quay at Freeport Terminal Two expanded by 176 metres and the west quay by 195 metres.
The expansion will cost €89 million and is slated to take two years to complete. “[It] will consolidate our reputation as the leading transshipment hub in the Mediterranean,” said Malta Freeport Terminals chief executive, Alex Montebello.
This latest investment follows an earlier €320 million programme to boost machinery and equipment at the freeport. Recent acquisitions include two giant megamax quay cranes as well as new IT systems to optimise operations.
The freeport offers services to 50 ports on the Mediterranean and 120 worldwide. With a throughput of almost three million teu per year, the facility directly employs 1,500 people and was named by Lloyds List as among the top ten ports in the world in terms of growth in percentage terms.
