Panama dusts off Rodman port project

The Secretariat of Ports wants these new concessions to be awarded as soon as possible so that existing terminal operators do not have to seek extensions to their existing contracts. In fact, attempts by Cargill to extend its existing concession at the end of last year were vetoed by the Port Authority

The Panamanian Ministry of Industry and Commerce is renegotiating the concession contract for the port of Rodman, located at the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal with the private company Parque Industrial Maritimo SA (Pimsa). The project has been mothballed since 2002. The idea is to establish a facility capable of handling grain and cars, as well as offering bunkering facilities to passing ships. Under the new agreement, Pimsa will have to offer facilities to the Navy and will have to increase the initial US$25m investment programme.
